Baluch prayer rug

A beautiful Baluch prayer rug with a central field that is woven with natural camel wool that may represent the desert over which is laid a tree of life that is carefully protected by a complex of borders. The borders are finely executed with some flowers or rosettes that echo those found on the tree itself. Within the main field are a complex of other details – the familiar S symbol as well as what may be pomegranates and the rams horn medallion guls sitting at the top and base. Also of interest are the hands that may be the hands of Fatima or simply indications of the ritual of postration in prayer. The four small white dots and the white border are also characteristic of the Baluch carpets representing snow and  purity in the desert.

The rug is quite exquisite and very fine quality that may be up to one hundred years old. Coming most probably from the Khorosan region it may also have been for commercial production to be sold to pilgrims passing into Iran on their way to Mecca. The decorated finishing in the ends is still complete as it has not been subject to any considerable wear.
