Kuba

Wool on wool simple village made family rug. Great colour spread and some abrash as the naturally dyed wools change over time. A kuba with the classic sufic border design. The centre field is complex with the three guls being enhanced by multiple other motifs with different colours scattered in abundance. At first glance the dominant deep colouring of the blues and the reds conceals the complexity and range of design and colour as well as the primitive simplicity of the inner border. There is a strange tension and order achieved as the arrows or fetters  pointing out balance with those pointing in and  all are bound by the reduced  S shape  hook motif  that is a reminder of the ubiquitous protector dragon form which combines into the swastika or cross.  Good fences make good neighbours and the protection is there against the evil eye. A rug that has enjoyed a long domestic life in many homes with many more lives ahead to live.
