Caucasian Kazak Fachralou prayer rug
Beautiful well worn and well repaired Kazak Fachralou prayer rug dated 1289 in the Islamic calendar which is AD 1871. Although a prayer rug it is consistent with the Fachralou design of the horizontal rectangle superimposed over a lozenge providing ten sides. Around the centre that leads up to the mihrab are complexes of rams horn guls, latch hooks and intricate border designs. Though extremely complex the design has a bold simplicity and harmony supported by the balance of natural dye red and ivory with selective use of brown, blue, orange and some peach. The four snake like red and white protection borders together with the red calyx or part horn running border is interesting. There are also some quite unusual anchor like representations at the base.
