Turkoman hatchli

Probably made by the Tekke people – a door hanging. Finely woven with a beautiful deep red that dominates the hanging allowing the bright and well defined ivory, orange and black to form their own patterns. The hathli or hatchlu is the term used to describe the door hanging that forms the entrance to the yurt or tent. Characteristically the hatchli is divided up into four partitions and is known by the term ‘engsi’ in Turkoman culture. It is suggested that the rug symbolizes a gateway to paradise where the cross, known as the hatchli reveals four gardens in paradise and the lower horizontal panel represents the sky doorway through which entrance to paradise is achieved. The lines of Y shaped representations are known as ‘Insi Kush’ , twon birds emblematic of vitality in paradise. The jagged outer and inner diamond guls and the tow lines of inner borders are evocative of the ikats
